Aspirations
Three areas I want to pursue in my career have come about for different reasons, and will address different need areas in my professional standards.
Exploring My Musical Skills
One thing I have realised, is that while my therapeutic skills have increased, and my professional and reflective conduct has strengthen, I find myself yearning for a greater skill base of musicianship.
Experiences in my life have put up barriers for certain areas of my musicality. As I get older and more comfortable in my skin, I find myself having a greater capacity to address these barriers and trust in my skills.
I have worked with some musically talented clients, and have on occasion had to admit that my musicality does not match theirs. My therapeutic based music interventions have improved, and I am consistently reflecting on my scope of practice. But as a musician, I find joy and value in playing and enjoying music.
Create a Mentorship Program
This idea for a project has formed through my initial struggles in building my career. I am now knowledgeable in how to navigate common issues for new graduates and have an interest in helping others to create a solid foundation. My experiences have shaped how I want my career to look in the future.
I plan to create a supervision program aimed at new graduates that goes through in detail the ways in which you can build a sole tradership in the allied health profession. It will cover essential resources, marketing and advocacy, business basics, and be a guide for regional, rural and remote areas, where your profession may not be well funded or understood.
Continuing My Education (Upskilling)
My final plan is ongoing reflective practice. I have realised I need to upskill to compete in the current environment, so I’m studying a graduate diploma in mental health, with the plan being able to call myself a ‘mental health clinician’, eventually moving to complete my Master in Mental Health.
However, I also need to continue critically reflecting on my programs, as the most significant changes to my values and practice has come from what my clients have shown me is important to them. Therefore, my journey for education has been focused on gaining functional knowledge that will assist my understanding of my clients.
